About Us

Birdsong Farm is a small family homestead located near Pedee, OR. We specialize in small livestock, humanely and naturally raised on pasture. Our animals get lots of garden extras and are never given antibiotics. We are focused on feeding ourselves homegrown, nourishing food and filling a niche for those seeking meat and eggs with exceptional quality and flavor. Product info and prices.

It is our joy to share our meat, duck eggs and seasonal produce with the community so that we can all eat delicious food!

Our Livestock

We are animal lovers. We are also omnivores. Several years ago, we decided if we were going to eat meat it would be grown here on the farm, or by a local farmer we respect. We believe that raising livestock humanely isn’t just a goal: it’s a requirement.

We currently raise Muscovy ducks, laying ducks (mixed heritage breeds and Indian runner crosses), Freedom Ranger chickens and New Zealand rabbits. All our animals provide us hours of entertainment, help us to cultivate and improve the soils in our organic garden and pastures and fill our freezers with delicious and nutritious meats. Our muscovy ducks are hatched and raised by their mothers, our laying ducks are free to splash and play in our winter-flooded field, our Freedom Ranger chickens kick and scratch on fresh pasture daily and our rabbits are housed in safe and sanitary cages and provided plenty of seasonal weeds and treats.

Our animals live the lives all livestock should. The quality of the meat and eggs reflects our high standards and care. Read more about our poultry or rabbits and order meat and eggs.

Organic Vegetables and Herbs

Have you read that digging in the soil is good for your mental health? There’s just something about cultivating the earth with the sun on your shoulders and a sweet snack of snowpeas or berries to fuel your labor. We are not certified organic but avoid chemicals because we don’t want them in our bellies or on our hands. Our soil is a challenge to work with but it improves every year thanks to our barn full of an unlimited supply of rabbit manure, a glorious compost heap and lots of liquid seaweed, kelp and decomposing cover crops.

Our organic gardens nourish our souls and our bellies

Birdsong Farm was ‘founded’ when Andy and Miranda Rommel, two artists with a homesteading dream, found a rotting and overgrazed foreclosure in the coastal foothills near Pedee, OR. The lush organic garden, healthy flocks of ducks and barn full of show quality rabbits are a big change from the overgrown mess they purchased….but there’s still lots of work to do. Isn’t there always lots of work to do on a homestead?

Miranda

Miranda is a children’s book illustrator, needle-felter (check out her gorgeous pet portraits here) and the ‘manager’ of the farm. She’s the one to make the to-do lists, start the plants, can the food, keep the calendar, and generally harass everyone to be sure we’re on track. You’ll find Miranda at the farmer’s market and at the other end of most email messages. Miranda grew up in southern Oregon and counts her blessings for all the green grass on this side of the mountains!

Andy

Andy is an illustrator, sculptor and mover of water and firewood. He has magic in his fingers and sandpaper which transforms our old cedar siding into beautiful wood sculptures. While Miranda farm-hustles, Andy’s happy to mosey (he is from Texas, after all). Andy is the calming force behind Miranda’s whirlwind and an excellent scalder of ducks. While we wait to add sheep to our farm, Andy is also the mower-in-chief and has a love-hate (ok, mostly hate) relationship with our vintage Ferguson tractor.

Want to help out on our farm? Share lunch with us in exchange for a few hours of weeding, butchering, harvesting, planting or compost turning. Send us a message to arrange a time to volunteer.
